NETFILE Opening in Canada: When You Can Start Filing Your Taxes
The way we file taxes has evolved dramatically over the past two decades, making it faster and more efficient to submit your returns. With tools like NETFILE, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offers taxpayers a quick and secure method to file returns online.
This article explains when to file your taxes, key deadlines, how NETFILE works, and why it’s a great option for fast-tracking your tax return.

When Does NETFILE Open for 2024?
For the 2023 tax year, NETFILE will open on February 19, 2024. It’s available most days between 6 AM and 3 AM ET and remains open until January 24, 2025.
What Is NETFILE?
Launched in 2001 by the CRA, NETFILE is an electronic service that allows taxpayers to file their tax returns online. It’s a faster alternative to traditional methods like mailing paper returns to tax centers. However, not everyone is eligible to use NETFILE, which we’ll explain later.
Why Use NETFILE?
Filing through NETFILE is quick, secure, and efficient. While paper filings can take up to eight weeks to process, using NETFILE typically gets your return processed within two weeks, meaning you could receive your refund faster.
You can submit your return through approved tax software, like TurboTax. The CRA ensures that all information submitted via NETFILE is encrypted and protected.
What Is the Deadline to File My Tax Return?
The general deadline for filing your 2023 tax return is April 30, 2024. For self-employed individuals, the filing deadline is extended to June 17, 2024, but any taxes owed must still be paid by April 30 to avoid interest charges.
Is NETFILE Safe to Use?
Yes. The CRA uses top-tier encryption and security measures to protect your personal data when you file via NETFILE. Once you submit your return, the CRA is responsible for the safety of your data. They also conduct validation checks to prevent fraud and ensure that your refund or Notice of Assessment is only sent to the address or bank account on file.
The CRA also implemented an additional security measure called the NETFILE Access Code (NAC) in recent years for enhanced protection.
How Do I Know If My Tax Return Has Been Filed?
After successfully filing through NETFILE, you’ll receive a confirmation number. This number is crucial for two reasons: it serves as proof that your return was received by the CRA and can be referenced if there are any issues with your submission.
If you don’t receive a confirmation number, your return hasn’t been transmitted. Québec residents also need to file their provincial return electronically with Revenue Québec.
What Happens After Filing?
Once your return is submitted through NETFILE, you can check its status by logging into the CRA’s MyAccount or, for Québec residents, RQ My Account. While some changes may appear immediately, it can take up to 48 hours for your return to be processed.
If you’ve set up direct deposit with the CRA, you can expect your refund within 10 days. Otherwise, a paper cheque may take six to eight weeks.
Your Notice of Assessment (NOA) will be sent to your MyAccount inbox once your return is processed. If you disagree with any part of the NOA, you have 90 days from the date of issue to contest it. If all looks correct, simply wait for your refund or make arrangements to pay any outstanding balance.
Who Cannot Use NETFILE?
The CRA doesn’t accept all returns via NETFILE. You cannot use NETFILE if:
- The CRA does not have your date of birth or Social Insurance Number on file.
- You went bankrupt in the past two years.
- You are filing a return for a deceased person.
- You are a non-resident or emigrant.
- Your address is outside Canada.
You can find a complete list of restrictions on the CRA website. In these cases, you’ll need to print and mail your return to the CRA.
Conclusion
NETFILE is a fast, secure, and efficient way to file your tax return online. By using approved software like TurboTax, you can simplify the process and potentially receive your refund faster. Even if you aren’t eligible to use NETFILE, you can still use tax software to prepare your return and mail it to the CRA.
